Butylglycol (BG)

Product trade name: Butylglycol

Chemical name of the compound: 2-butoxyethanol

Synonyms: 2-butoxyethanol, glycol monobutyl ether, ethylene glycol monobutyl ether

Chemical and physical properties: A clear, colorless, oily liquid with a characteristic, but mild, odour. It is miscible with water and with common organic solvents.

Use of the raw material: Mainly used in the paint industry as it is a low volatility solvent and therefore can both extend the drying time of coatings and improve their flow. It is also used as a solvent in printing inks due to its high boiling point, textile dyes, and as a component of hydraulic fluids. It is also a chemical intermediate and as such is the starting material for the production of butyl glycol acetate, which itself is an excellent solvent. It is also the starting material for the production of plasticizers in the reaction of phthalic anhydride.

Health safety: Irritating to eyes and skin. Harmful if swallowed and if inhaled.
